Verily, a feast hath been enjoyed within yonder tavern!
5th April 2022 • Mautkeller • Nuremberg
In the realm of beer, which for many doth unveil the gates to mirth and revelry, a lengthy chain of history doth repose, oft unnoticed by those who partake in the cool brew.
A piece of cultural lore, by the fewest observed, lies concealed within each quaff.
The origins of beer do reach back into the obscurity of time, some six millennia afore Christ, when mankind first did encounter the magic of fermentation.
But 'twas not until the early Middle Ages that beer found a true sanctuary within the cloisters, those tranquil havens of faith and knowledge. It is said that the first monastery to brew the golden draught was that of St. Gallen in the Switzerland of today, according to an ancient chronicle from the year of our Lord, eight hundred and twenty.
The monks, in their stillness and devotion, did master the art of conjuring a nourishing and delectable libation from humble ingredients, which enriched not only their own oft-sparse repasts but also the souls of the faithful. Especially in the time of fasting, when belts were tightened, a robust beer was a welcomed indulgence, for, as the monks knew well: "What's liquid doth not break the fast."
To this day, the tradition of strong ales endures primarily in Bavaria, where the dark and malty brews continue to capture the hearts of beer connoisseurs.
And thus, to gain a glimpse into this enthralling chronicle, I bid thee to pay a visit to the Mautkeller, where thou canst partake in a communal repast whilst attired in ancient vestments. This serves as a splendid prelude to the grand ball, and the Mautkeller itself boasts a history as rich as the beer that flows therein.
The Mauthalle was constructed betwixt 1498 and 1502 by Hans Beheim the Elder upon the penultimate moat of the city. In times of dearth, these twelve granaries assured the populace's sustenance. The building bore passageways for carts upon its narrower flanks, and hoisting hatches above the gable axes and along the eavesides facilitated the transport to the cellar. In the year 1571/72, the imperial customs and weigh-house took residence within this structure, with the cellar serving as a wine storage (also known as the "Herrenkeller").
The appellation "Mauthalle" was not bestowed upon this estate until the nineteenth century, due to its use as the chief tollhouse for customs receipts. In the year 1898, the Mauthalle underwent transformation into a commercial edifice. Yet, since the year 1929, the cellar hath fulfilled its present purpose as a gastronomic abode, where one may celebrate the tradition of Franconian hospitality, beer, and wine. Here, within the Mautkeller, history and delight converge to form an indelible experience.
