Workshop with dances of the ball for beginners & advanced
12nd-4th April, 2023 • Ballettförderzentrum • Nuremberg
Finally you can dance again
and spend a whole week dancing.
Oh, how much, how long we had to do without it.
And nothing drives away stress and worries faster,
relaxes tense nerves more than filling your head
with beautiful spatial paths and steps
to forget everyday life.
As early as the Renaissance,
Elizabeth I brought rural dances to the court
to sweeten the time in amusing togetherness,
and the first longways can also be found
in the works of Caroso and Negri.
So it is no wonder that many of the melodies
of the later recorded dances have their origins
in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Later, the so-called English or Country Dances
spread throughout Europe.
We know from the descriptions of many chroniclers
such as Pepys, de Cro˙ and Casanova
that they were used on a wide variety of occasions
at big balls, in the ballrooms,
but also in some inns or on private occasions,
they provided fun and entertainment,
often late into the night.
Since the ball focuses on the fascination
of Nuremberg's heyday and less on a fixed date,
I was able to select and prepare a lot of nice things
to spend the whole week
with the ball's loveliest ballroom dancing
in the Renaissance style.
The course is structured in such a way
that we really step step by step
from the simple to the extensive dances,
from the basics to the impressive step combinations,
until the whole program of the ball
is also accessible to beginners.
Everyone can attend the ball
in a relaxed and confident manner.

The beginners learn and concentrate
on the figure sequence of the dances.
More advanced participants on:
Basic steps (such as Fleuret or Spezzato),
the footing figures (Setting, Trabucchetto,
Balances, Continenza, Ripresa, Battuto, Capriol etc.)
We will also go into the nature of the ballroom
and its stone floor and how the steps should be performed
with the ball in a way that is easy on the joints.
Various dance figures (like "Hands across",
"Heys" & "Chains" for different numbers
of dancers and much more)
are shown and practiced.

The following dances will be shown and practiced:
There are many dances,
on the one hand highly noble dances
of the Italian Renaissance, as well
as the somewhat coarser French Arbeau dances
all danced together in the amusing form
of a dance floor with a "caller".
The program consists of light and amusing dances.
